Is your water bill too high?

Nobody likes a surprisingly high water bill. So if you’ve received one recently, what can you do?

According to the EPA, upwards of 10% of homes in the United States suffer from some sort of leak or another. Many of them waste around 10,000 gallons of water annually. This tallies up to trillions of gallons of lost water every year across our nation. As we’ve seen in recent news, some cities and municipalities need all the extra water reserves they can get, in case of draught or fire. And, if consumers are wasting water, that can add up to amplifying the lack of water when the community needs it.

Though your local municipality might have made a clerical error with your water bill, the most likely cause of your high bill is a leak somewhere. Leaks are almost always in one of two places: In a pipe or in a fixture.

Let’s tackle the second option first. If you have a toilet that constantly runs, which might not be immediately obvious, you could be sending hundreds of gallons of water down the drain. This puts unnecessary strain on the local sewer or your private septic… and your wallet. Installing a new flush valve or flapper can be a quick and inexpensive fix.

As for pipes, they can be hidden anywhere. The leak could be in a crawlspace or in the yard. Obviously, you want to look for wet or damp areas in the yard or under your house, but if you can’t find it, we might be able to.

Once the leak is found and fixed, you can show your repair bill to your city’s water billing department for a refund on your recent high bill.
